Why visit
This varied loop from Trávník leads through the rocky site of the vanished Milštejn Castle to the Naděje reservoir. Along the way, woodland paths alternate with sandstone rocks, traces of millstone quarrying and the Hamerský stream valley.
Milštejn Castle was built on a sandstone rock beside an old trade route between Bohemia and Lusatia. After the castle was abandoned, prolonged quarrying of high-quality sandstone for millstones radically changed its appearance. Today the site is marked mainly by a massive rock formation, a gateway, cavities and only slight remnants of masonry.
The Naděje reservoir was built on the Hamerský stream in 1937–1938 as a water supply for a mill and sawmill. It lies in a deep wooded valley and its water remains very cold even in summer.
The main loop is 8.2 kilometres long and follows narrower woodland paths in places. A separate 8.4-kilometre pushchair-friendly route uses easier paths while still linking the same main destinations.
