Why visit
The rock castle in Sloup v Čechách is a popular family destination with a visitor route carved into sandstone. Combine a visit with a walk through the village or other sights in the surrounding rocks.
The sandstone outcrop rises more than thirty metres above the surrounding terrain. Its vertical and overhanging walls, broad upper plateau and many spaces carved into the rock create an unusual visitor circuit.
The medieval castle survives mainly in its rock-cut rooms and building remains. Later Baroque alterations associated with the hermitage changed the site significantly. Passages, stairs and galleries connect its secular and sacred spaces.
The interiors are not filled with collections; the rock itself, the empty carved spaces and the views from above create the strongest impression. This combination of a natural landmark and human alterations gives the site its distinctive atmosphere.
